Serving the Poor and Homeless in Downtown Detroit
The Fort Street Presbyterian Church Open Door Ministry has had the privilege of serving God's people for over 35 years! Every Thursday we open our doors to serve a hearty meal to over 400 people who are homeless or cannot afford food. Also, each person leaves with sandwiches for later in the day. During the last year, 21,000 meals were served to homeless and poor people. In addition, clothing, showers, medical services, and haircuts are available. A social worker provides counseling for assistance benefits. Job postings are made available in the local area. With your help, lives have been touched or changed.

Here are some quotes from our volunteers and donors:
If You Have Time to Help on Thursday Mornings
Church members and other people in the community willing to serve are requested to offer their time and talents during our new Praise Services in the Stapleton Chapel from 8:30-9:00 a.m. on Thursdays. If you have an instrument you would like to play, a song you would like to sing or lead, a prayer or testimony or devotion you would like to share, it would greatly be appreciated.
People are also needed from 8:30 - 11:00 a.m. to serve food as well as distribute clothing and shoes.
It would be good for our guests to build deeper relationships with church members so that they may feel comfortable to visit us on a Sunday morning. Maybe you can make a once-a-month commitment to assist? Regular volunteers (who are all from other churches besides Fort Street) say they always leave feeling blessed!
