Yes, it's true, after my first practice I left crying. Why did I ever think that I, Sarah of no musical ability, could ever sing one of the most famous pieces of music in the world? When I say no musical ability, I mean that I can't tell the difference between an A and a D and forget that metso stuff! It would take a miracle, or a very persuasive mother, to get me to try another practice. But I went back and some how managed to make it through the whole musical evening. Week after week I continued to adventure back. I continued to try to figure what I was supposed to be doing and soon I found that I actually started to recognize songs and cues. Not only was I learning about my voice and music but I was also making friends and connecting with a dedicated, kind, fun, talented, and musical group of people.

The Fort Street Chorale is a unique blend of novice to veteran. Every one comes for their own personal reasons yet there is one common goal. Every one sings at their ability level and Ed Kingins teaches and leads so that each person continues to learn and grow no matter what their background may be.

On the first Saturday in December, I with the rest of the chorale family ambled onto the risers. I was still unsure of what to expect for that first performance. By the end, I know I didn't sing every part exactly right or as well as the person next to me but when the audience jumps to their feet for a standing ovation my heart swelled with pride because I knew that I was a part of something much bigger and that I couldn't have done alone.

I, Sarah of no musical ability, will return to the Fort Street Chorale family for my fifth year and I will continue to learn more about my voice and dedication and about being a part of something I can't do alone. If you are interested in joining our wonderfully mixed group please join us!
