Adult Christian Education – February 2007 NOTE: Classes on January 7, 21 and 28 will include selected chapters from the PBS video series “From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians”. The video clips are approximately 45-55 minutes in duration and will be followed by discussion among class participants. Powerful Words – Part I Join us as we read and discuss the historic and powerful words of some of the earliest African American freedom writers. We’Äôll select and read brief passages written by Benjamin Banneker, Richard Allen, Samuel Cornish & John Russwurm, David Walker, Dred Scott, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Henry Garnett, Blanche Bruce, Ida Wells Barnett, Mary Church Terrell, Booker T Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, James Weldon and J. Rosamond Johnson.
February 11 – Second Annual Evolution Sunday IN THE BEGINNING – Scripture and Science Slide show presentation by Fort Street’Äôs own John Neuman. This is a reprise of John’Äôs excellent presentation from a couple years ago. The talk will cover a scientific understanding of the Biblical six-days of creation and include some commentary on creationism, evolution and intelligent design. We invite you to attend and hope you leave with a new appreciation for the ancient creation narrative, Genesis 1. Powerful Words – Part II Join us as we read and discuss the historic and powerful words of some of the African American freedom writers of the 20th century. We’Äôll select and read brief passages written by Marcus Garvey, Mary McLeod Bethune, Langston Hughes, Paul Robeson, George Washington Carver, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, Alex Haley, Barbara Jordan, Jesse Jackson, Marian Write Edelman and Toni Morrison. For many of these writings we will listen to recordings of the actual speeches made.

Powerful Words – Part III Join us as we view and discuss a video of the recent presentation by Reverend C.T. Vivian on the occasion of the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Recognition program held at Wayne State University on January 12, 2007. Rev Vivian was a colleague of Dr. King’Äôs and weaves history with the present and the future in his moving presentation entitled ’ÄúCivil Rights’Ķ Where are we now?’Äù
